Statistics in Research

Statistics play an important role in our every day lives. It is used in different aspects and fields in the world, including engineering, decision-making, business, different industries, and most importantly, healthcare and medicine. Last Wednesday, we were given a lecture about statistics in research. It was about he difference between descriptive and inferential statistics, types of data, data description, measures of central tendency, variation and skewness, methods of data analysis, and methods of data presentation. Program outcomes learned were #4 (engage in research activities) and #7 (engage in continuing personal and professional development). The lecture we had on statistics was delivered in a way that it will be easy for us to understand since we are really into medical field, and statistics is not our forte. The presentation was not too lengthy, but it was still giving a lot of information. I am so thankful that Mrs. Madelo was able to discuss it thoroughly a

MY VISION, MISSION AND GOALS

A seven-year-old girl was sitting around her home’s porch on a cold December evening when she saw her neighbor arriving in a black SUV. Her neighbor was a renowned doctor of her province—-well respected, wealthy, and loved by everyone and from the little girl’s perspective, the doctor’s life was perfect and she told herself she would one day become a doctor and live the wealthy and perfect life. The little girl has grown into a fine woman and has enrolled in a respected medical school in the Queen City of the South. The dream of one day becoming a renowned doctor is still on track however, the perspective of the reason of becoming one has changed.   When I was still a Medical Technology student, we had a subject in which we went to poor areas of Cebu City to evaluate the health of the people living there. I interviewed some of the locals living within the vicinity, and there was this one old lady who said she was 65 and looked like she was suffering from something an

MY IDOL PHYSICIAN-RESEARCHER

Qi Shi Huang, the first emperor of China, was a resilient and brilliant man. He survived a thousand battles and won countless wars but there was one thing he could not win, a battle where not even the sharpest sword nor the most elite soldiers anywhere in the world could win, aging. In his old age, he sent scouts, scholars and soldiers to find the elixir of life whose powers provided the user with immortality. It only took one sip to win the battle against aging and lived forever. However, in his quest for the divine elixir, all ended up failing. As a medical student, I believe that medicine is not all about saving lives, it is also about prolonging lives. The story of the emperor in his quest for the elixir of life has led to many experiments in which all failed but I think God does not want us to live forever, but He permits us to live longer just like Sergio Canavero, a 52-year-old Italian surgeon-scientist who dreams to transplant the first human head.

CDU-CM VMG and Program Outcomes

“We cannot become what we want by remaining what we are” -Max Depree         As I enter medical school in one of the most renowned medical schools in the Philippines, I see myself as a nobody who aims to be a somebody, however, medical school isn’t a place for the faint-hearted, it is a place where people try their hardest until one day someone could tell them “thank you, doctor”. CHED’s program outcomes for medical doctors provide a guide for aspiring doctors. With CDUCM’s vision and mission, I am confident that these outcomes will be attained by the students.                I have come to a realization that the transformation from being a medical student into a fully pledged doctor is not an easy path. I have looked into the eyes of my batchmates and I see mixed emotions deep into their souls. Joy, fear, hope and regret. Joy because they have reached a new journey in life, fear of failing our courses, hope that they may one day fulfill the
